In 1959, Irving Ellman, DDS, a general dentist and electrical engineer founded Ellman Dental Manufacturing Company. He proceeded to develop fifty patented devices for use in his dental practice.  One of his first 'inventions,' Roto Pros™ - Rotosonic Scalers, is still one of the Company's most popular products.  The Roto Pros™ - Rotosonic Scalers are a simpler, more efficient method of removing calculus from the roots of teeth.

Dr. Ellman's curiosity about radiowaves later prompted him to take a known technology called diathermy, and apply a high-frequency radiowave, thus creating Radiosurgery.  The advanced minimally-invasive surgical device allows for a bloodless, micro smooth incision and minimal tissue alteration.

In the early 1970's, Dr. Ellman patented the Dento-Surg® 90 FFP, the dental model radiofrequency device, to perform surgical procedures in the oral cavity. Dr. Ellman worked closely with UCLA’s Dr. John Flocken and their Biomedical Department in the validation of this revolutionary new technology.  It is still used by over 35,000 dentists worldwide.

During this inception period, Dr. Ellman's wife, Shirley Ellman, is largely credited with getting the word out and attracting attention for her husband's inventions, marketing them at dental conventions and later via mail order.
